The electricity industry in NZ is a complicated beast with many parties having a vested interest and all play an integral role.

New Zealand is fortunate that most of our electricity comes from renewable resources (hydro, wind, geothermal, solar etc) and is produced by generation companies.

This electricity is then 'transported' around the country by transmission lines (the terms 'the main trunk line, the Cook Strait Inter-island HVDC cable might sound familiar here?) till it reaches any one of the 36 electricity networks.

Networks look after the physical lines, load management, GXP's and generally keep everything going.  Last in line before the consumer are the retailers - their job is to bill the end client and in streetlighting world, they receive either load (usage) reports or meter data so they know just what to charge.

In the world of street lighting and road-side assets, assets are owned by either Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency or local councils, and the poles are owned by either of those parties or by the Networks when the light asset owner shares the pole.   Phew - I am bet you are glad you wondered that!

As you can quickly see, the need be able to understand and communicate with all - that's where NZStreetlighting comes in.
